("Malleus Maleficarum")

Anthony Burgess. A Clockwork Orange

INTRODUCTION
Anthony Burgess was born in Manchester in 1917 and is a graduate of the
University there. After six years in the Army he worked as an instructor for
the Central Advisory Council for Forces Education, as a lecturer in
Phonetics and as a grammar school master. From 1954 till 1960 he was an
education officer in the Colonial Service, stationed in Malaya and Brunei.
He became a full-time writer in 1960, though his first novel had been
published four years earlier. A late starter in the art of fiction, he had
spent his creative energy previously on music, and he has composed many
full-scale works for orchestra and other media.
Anthony Burgess maintains his old interest in music and in linguistics,
and these have conditioned the style and content of the novels he writes.
Though he and his wife no longer live abroad, foreign travel remains a great
source of inspiration. He has, to date, published many novels, a book on
linguistics, and various critical works.

Arkadi and Boris Strugatski. Spontaneous Reflex

Utm got bored.
In general, boredom as a reaction to the tedium and monotony of
surroundings or inner dissatisfaction with oneself, and loss of interest in
life, are only characteristic of Man and some animals. To be bored one needs
to have something to be bored with, so to say, - that is, a delicately and
perfectly organized nervous system. One needs the capacity for abstract
thought or, at the very least, suffering. Utm had no nervous system in the
common sense of the word, and he did not ponder abstract thoughts. What is
more, he did not know how to suffer. He only took in his surroundings,
memorized and acted. Nevertheless, he got bored.
The thing is, nothing new around him was left to memorize since the

roman
Traduit du russe
par Michel Pйtris

Edition Champ Libre, Paris, 1972

Au tournant, dans la profondeur
de la trouйe de la forкt,
Boris Pasternak.
Grimpe, grimpe doucement,
Escargot, la pente du Fuji,
Plus haut, jusqu'au sommet!
Issa, fils de paysan.
I

Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. Destination: Amaltheia

Arkady
and
Boris Strugatsky,
authors of "Destination; Amaltheia", have
already several collections of SF stories to their credit. Arkady Strugatsky
(b. 1925) is a linguist and translator specialising in Japanese. Boris (b.
1933) is an astronomer and works at the computer laboratory of Pulkovo
Observatory. The title story of this volume is their second novelette
appearing after "The Country of the Purple Clouds" -about explorations on
Venus, First Prize winner in a best SF book competition.

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. .. . Hydrogen phantoms, the strangest
and most enigmatic objects in the solar system. Enormous masses of hydrogen
and helium tinged by methane and ammonia. What is their structure? What
makes them rotate at such a frantic .speed? What is their source of energy?
We observe titanic changes on their surface. We see strips of clouds streak
along, broken now and then by giant whirls, streamers of gases erupt into
space in flaring bursts. What forces are behind these outer phenomena?
Thermonuclear reactions? But these giants have sub-zero surface
temperatures: -216°F on Jupiter and even lower on the others. What is then
the mechanism of these primaries? Perhaps it is some physical principle we
don't know yet and even do not so far dare to guess at....

Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. Poor cruel folk

---------------------------------------------------------------
© Copyright by Arkady Strugatsky, Boris Strugatsky

The King sat naked. Like a foolish pauper on the street, he sat leaning
against a cold wall, drawing in his blue, goose-bumped legs. He shivered,
with his eyes closed, he listened, but everything was quiet.
He awoke at midnight from a nightmare and immediatelly understood that
he was finished. Some one weezed and writhed by the door of the bedroom
suite, he heard footsteps, metalic jingling and drunken mummbling of His
Highness, Uncle Buht: "Let me through... Let me.. Break it down, hell with
it..." Wet with icy sweat, he slintly rolled off his bed, ducked into a
secter closet, and loosing himself he ran down the underground passage.
Something sqelched under his bare feet, the startled rats dashed away, but
he did not notice anything, just now, sitting next to a wall he remembered
everything; the darkness, the slippery walls, and the pain from a blow on
the head against the shakled door to the temple, and his own unberable high
yelp.
They shall not enter here, he thought. No one shall enter here. Only if
the King order's so. But the King shall not order... He snickered
hysterically. Oh no, the King will not order! He carefully un screwed up his
eyes and saw his blue, hairless legs with scraped knees. Still alive, he
thought. I will live, because they shall not enter here.

PROLOGUE
A massive red and white coach arrived. Departure was announced.
- Alright, off you go, - said Daugeh.
Bykov grumbled:
- We'll make it. By the time they all board...
He watched sullenly how the other passengers entered the bus at
leisure, one by one. About a hundred people were boarding.
- This will take fifteen minutes, at least, - Grisha remarked
knowingly.
Bykov gave him a strict look.
- Button up your shirt, - he said.
- Dad, I'm hot, - Grisha said.
- Do up your shirt, - Bykov repeated. - Don't walk around like a
slouch.
- Don't look at me, - said Yurkovski. - I am allowed, whilst you aren't
yet.
Daugeh looked at him and shifted his eyes. Didn't feel like looking at
Yurkovski - seeing his self-assured flabby face with a surly drooping lower

Clifford D.Simak. All flesh is grass

1

When I swung out of the village street onto the main highway, there was
a truck behind me. It was one of those big semi jobs and it was really
rolling. The speed limit was forty-five on that stretch of road, running
through one corner of the village, but at that time in the morning it wasn't
reasonable to expect that anyone would pay attention to a posted speed.
I wasn't too concerned with the truck. I'd be stopping a mile or so up
the road at Johnny's Motor Court to pick up Alf Peterson, who would be
waiting for me, with his fishing tackle ready. And I had other things to
think of, too - principally the phone and wondering who I had talked with on
the phone. There had been three voices and it all was very strange, but I
had the feeling that it may have been one voice, changed most wonderfully to
make three voices, and that I would know that basic voice if I could only
pin it down. And there had been Gerald Sherwood, sitting in his study, with
two walls lined by books, telling me about the blueprints that had formed,
unbidden, in his brain. There had been Stiffy Grant, pleading that I not let
them use the bomb. And there had been, as well, the fifteen hundred dollars.
Just up the road was the Sherwood residence, set atop its hill,

Clifford D.Simak. All the traps of Earth

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
© Copyright 1960 Clifford D.Simak
Prepared by: Anada Sucka, August 12, 1999
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE INVENTORY list was long. On its many pages, in his small and
precise script, he had listed furniture, paintings, china, silverware and
all the rest of it - all the personal belongings that had been accumulated
by the Barringtons through a long family history.
And now that he had reached the end of it, he noted down himself, the
last item of them all:
One domestic robot, Richard Daniel, antiquated but in good repair.
He laid the pen aside and shuffled all the inventory sheets together
and stacked them in good order, putting a paper weight upon them - the
little exquisitely carved ivory paper weight that aunt Hortense had picked
up that last visit she had made to Peking.

Clifford D.Simak. Way Station

Original copyright year: 1963
Date of e-text: June 26, 1999
Prepared by: Anada Sucka

1
The noise was ended now. The smoke drifted like thin, gray wisps of fog
above the tortured earth and the shattered fences and the peach trees that
had been whittled into toothpicks by the cannon fire. For a moment silence,
if not peace, fell upon those few square miles of ground where just a while
before men had screamed and torn at one another in the frenzy of old hate
and had contended in an ancient striving and then had fallen apart,
exhausted.
For endless time, it seemed, there had been belching thunder rolling
from horizon to horizon and the gouted earth that had spouted in the sky and
the screams of horses and the hoarse bellowing of men; the whistling of
metal and the thud when the whistle ended; the flash of searing fire and the
brightness of the steel; the bravery of the colors snapping in the battle
wind.
Then it all had ended and there was a silence.

ICE Book Reader Professional -

ICE Book Reader Professional -
ICE Book Reader Professional
ICE Book Reader Professional
